Images from our trip to Diamantina MG
Introduction
Diamantina MG: The fame of Diamantina began with the discovery of precious stones when the city was still known as Arraial do Tejuco, back in the 18th century. Even after the diamonds heading to Portugal became scarce, the region remained prominent - first, due to its personalities, such as Chica da Silva, the slave who lived like a queen after marrying a Portuguese contractor; and the former president Juscelino Kubitschek, its most illustrious son.
Later, due to the title of Cultural Heritage of Humanity granted by UNESCO in 1999, which revealed to the world an untouched landscape formed by baroque churches and colonial houses scattered along stone-paved streets illuminated by lanterns.
However, Diamantina unveiled many other charms. It showcased the lush frame formed by the Serra do Espinhaço, dotted with caves and waterfalls; and the tradition of cultural festivals, such as the serenades that gave rise to the region's most famous event, the Vesperata. Held on Saturday nights, the concert gathers a crowd on Quitanda street. On this occasion, the balconies of colonial houses are filled with musicians playing waltzes, boleros, sambas... it's impossible not to be moved.

On the way, we will visit Gruta do Maquiné, considered one of the most beautiful caves in the world and regarded as the cradle of Brazilian paleontology. It features beautiful natural sculptures and stalactites of various shapes on the cave ceiling. Discovered in 1825 by a local farmer, its use began as a shelter for prehistoric communities.
These communities did not habitually enter dark areas but used the cave entrances as protected areas. The existence of rock paintings and other archaeological remains are indicators of these uses. Gruta de Maquiné has approximately 650 meters of galleries and seven explored and prepared halls with lighting and walkways, allowing visitors to safely admire the wonders of Maquiné, where the entire route is accompanied by a local guide.
After lunch, we will continue to Diamantina with accommodation at Pousada do Garimpo. In the evening, optional outing to the Diamantina Concert. Lunch included.
NOTE: It is mandatory to wear closed shoes to enter the Cave. Children must be at least 6 years old to visit the cave and must be accompanied by guardians.

In the evening, we will participate in the famous Vesperata, a special serenade where musicians, positioned on the balconies of houses, fill the city with music for the audience, who are specially seated at tables arranged in the streets.
